hey what up guys, i've been gone for a while but this question has been bugging me. i'm almost a junior at a university and am majoring in Bio with a minor in Chem. I started school to become a secondary ed teacher but i dont know if thats right for me anymore. Minoring in Chem was a huge mistake because i suck at it. My overall GPA is a 2.8 mostly because of god damn orgo lol. anyways i have absolutly no idea wtf i'm going to do with a bio degree. Any suggestions/ post what u do with yours. like the way i'm viewing it now... is kinda hard to do anything with a 2.8 gpa. _________________ run b@#$% run for your life! get help! |

I'm not entirely convinced that it's too late to switch majors. I did all the requirements for a double major in physics and mathematics in a little over two years (with the exception of calculus 1 and intro physics 1 & 2 -- BS degree).
Seems like you have two years to go... why not extend that by a semester or two and switch majors...?
Whatever you do, best wishes.
Cheers,

About my avatar: This is a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulation of the merger of two galaxies. The code was written by Volker Springel of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics at Garching Germany. This simulation uses 20,000 disk particles (stars) and 40,000 halo particles (dark matter) per galaxy. The three views are, from left to right, the x-y plane, x-z plane, and y-z plane. |

yeah been thinking about that to... my problem is bio is really only my really strong science topic, my chem is bad my math is mediocre, i really like genetics but i think that is mostly in the realm of bio. changing to like business or like history or something like that seems like a waste at this point. _________________ run b@#$% run for your life! get help! |

How about engineering? If your college doesn't have an engineering track, maybe you could switch schools....

Do something you enjoy and your marks will improve. I taught some geology courses and there was always a few 'lost' bio students who wanted to sink their teeth into a more nitty gritty field. One of them is now my wife! She also struggled in her first year in biology despite being sharp as a tack. Geology proved to be her thing...light on the math but heavy on the creative thinking and hands on material.
If your institution is large enough go around to the various departments and speak to the profs. Don't be shy. This is your life. Think about one of the natural history fields that can offer some concrete field courses, etc. Ever thought of entymology? botany? etc.? These can give you a degree to qualify as a science teacher AND lead to careers outside of academia. Geology was a real positive because the large energy companies were willing to take on students for summer employment then provide scholarships and so on if you showed some interest. I got to work in three countries during the off school months and although hard work it was like a paid working holiday.
If you're in college and don't feel discouraged at times then you're not a healthy human being. My friends and I talk about university days and we thought everyone else but ourselves were doing fine until we compare notes. We were all confused and messed up at times. A ten ton weight on the shoulders. Alone with doubts in our heads and wanting to shove it all.
If you're in college you are already in a minority and if you survived first year you are even in a smaller select minority. Feel good about youself for getting this far. |

i appreciate the advice and the words of ecouragement... at this point i think my main concerns on how bad a 2.8 is and the lack of things to do with a bio degree. Wish i tried at school my first year and did good. oh well cant go back now... just tryin to optimize my future situation whatever it may be. _________________ run b@#$% run for your life! get help! |
