I'll be the first to admit that my ideas on string theory are shakey.
So ... matter is made from strings and these strings vibrate? And cause the matter we see?
But the different ideas of physics dont mesh together so they're looking for a grand theory to tie them all together?
What would happen if we could make the strings stop vibrating?
Thanks |

I think you pretty much have the basic idea.
Particles are made up of vibrating strings vibrating at different speeds according to the mass of the matter, to make up what we feel and touch. And the theory has the potential of unifying quantum mechanics and relativity. It goes way deeper and gets more complicated, but super interesting.
And Quantum uncertainty states a string cannot be completely still. If it were possible then we could know it's exact position and speed.
Anyway you should get the book "The Elegant Universe" By Brian Greene. Maybe you've heard of him? He's an expert on the topic and when it comes to explaining the theory and everything behind it he's a good writer too. If you don't get your answers here or elsewhere on the web, you'll probably find them in the book. |

Ignore string theory. It is only a desperate attempt to progress farther in physics. Allot of what they "theorize" originates from some type of self need within them to make physics elegant. "Ohhh, yes, vibrating strings like the strings on a violin!!! How wonderful!" I have heard many physicists talk about string theory...it is like listening to some 70's hippie attempting to explain how a tree is. _________________ Forget all that you know, achievements can only be accomplished by starting from nothing and selectively applying facts that are purely objective and absolutely necessary.

So what's your theory? I agree with some of what your saying, i think there's a reason its called theoricial physics |
