is it just a coincidence that over half of the ancient cultures predicted the end of the world to be on or around december 21st 2012 and also the near certain solar storm predicted by nasa on the same day

More likely, it is simply not true.

I didn't say I was sure, just that it is more likely. Where is your evidence of such predictions?

"2012 is sometimes claimed to be a great year of spiritual transformation (or apocalypse). Many esoteric sources interpret the completion of the thirteenth B'ak'tun cycle in the Long Count of the Maya calendar (which occurs on December 21 by the most widely held correlation) to mean there will be a major change in world order.[who?]

Accordingly, several eclectic authors claim that a major, world-changing event will take place in 2012:

* The 1997 book The Bible Code claims that, according to certain algorithms of the Bible code, an asteroid or comet will collide with the Earth.
* The 2006 book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl by Daniel Pinchbeck discusses theories of a possible global awakening to psychic connection by the year 2012, creating a noosphere.

Other prophecies and apocalyptic writings and hypotheses for this year include:

* Terence McKenna's numerological novelty theory suggests a point of singularity in which humankind will go through a great shift in consciousness."

All I can say, is that it would be ridiculously lame if the world ended just as I get out of college.

yes, the world is full of coincidences and suckers who believe they're anything more than that

"over half" ? name them + how do you know that's over half of all ancient civilisations

i doubt very much whether nasa can predict solar storms that far ahead and with any degree of accuracy - maybe they can predict when the solar cycle will reach its maximum, but that's not even confined to one month, let alone one day

I think the ancient culture that predicts it is the Maya. Their calendar was incredibly accurate, and well thought out, however. Their belief that previous long counts had ended in cataclysm may or may just as easily have been based on myth as upon any preserved history.

Still, if the internet has the same effect on things as the printing press, we can expect a widespread increase in peoples' awareness of things. I don't know if it's too unbelievable that we might approach a sort of "singularity" where crazy stuff just starts getting invented really fast.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going to have fun in January 2013 reviving this and the other threads claiming the end of the world in 2012.

Seriously, this is even less likely than the whole Y2K thing causing the end of modern technology or even the world.

The premise is so similar as to be laughable. The Mayans didn't think the calendars they made hundreds of years ago needed to go past 2012, they probably planned on making new calendars later, and the programmers of old software never though their code would still be in use by the year 2000, they probably planned on making new programs later.

People need to calm down, I just saw on the news that a bunch of Dutch are getting worked up over this. Its getting way out of hand.

If all of a sudden our civilization was overtaken by a more technologically advanced civilization, do you honestly think they should worry when a few of the nut cases in their society say, Look! none of the calenders these ancient people made while they still existed go past the year 3000!

I will match all bets that are in favour for the world changing forever/be doomed/ change to plumpudding at or around 12-12-2012 or 21-12-2012 or whatever arbitrary (BTW does anyone of those idiots claiming that anything out of the ordinary will happen at this date understand the meaning of "arbitrary"? ) date you use. Unlimited amounts, and I will offer 10^6:1 odds. So you bet €1 and if correct will recive € 10^6 Any takers? Mr. Green

it is not a coincidence, it is selective bias. There have been dozens (if not hundreds) of predictions of the end of the world. The only thing that 2012 has going for it, that many others don't, is that it hasn't rolled around in order to be shown to be false, yet.

Quote:
In this section of our web site, we have listed over 7 dozen past predictions of the end of the world which have one factor in common: none ever came true. There is every likelihood that most (perhaps all) of the future predictions will not materialize either.

http://www.religioustolerance.org/end_wrld.htm#past

The solar storms in 2012 are predicted to be approximately as intense as those seen in 1958, a year in which the world did not end. Indeed, a very brief google of remarkable events in 1958 turns up ... not much.
