Nibiru is a summerian God. Someone named Zacharia Zechin or something like that, after reading summerian texts, came to the conclusion that Nibiru was a planet. This mysterious planet had a very elliptical orbit, beyond the orbit of Pluto and within the orbit of Venus. Now on this planet he concluded lived a very advanced race of aliens. These aliens needed slaves so they took several of the inhabitants of Earth, now known as Homo Erectus, and infused their DNA with our own. Modern man was thus born.
Now the Mayans , a completely different civilization, adopted 3 different types of calendars that would coincide with each other approximately every 5000 years. This became known as an age. There were 13 long count cycles in an age. The Mayans believed they were either in the fourth or fifth age out of five ages, can't remember specifically. At the end of each age was a reawakening. The end of the next age is in December 2012. The Aztecs adopted the Mayan calendar which is the reason why you'll see unknowledgable people on this subject say things like "Well more than just the Mayans said this".
As you can see it's all hocus pocus brought on by popular culture. Bring some end-of-the-world hysterics into the mix and you have December 21(or 23) 2012.

my current calendar stops on the 31st of december 2008 - does that have any special meaning ?

Yes, that date, december 31, 2008 coincides with at least 123,108 deaths around the world predicted to occur the same day. Look at the numbers! At least 123,108 people will DIE on 12/31/08 Coincidence? I think not!
As well as the deaths, at least 311,208 births will occur as well, and for people in europe that coincides with the way they display the day/month/year 31/12/08!
In my opinion there is NO WAY this could be a coincidence! I suspect something will happen that day that will totally change the world as we know it!!
(see how easy it is to start your own doomsday hypothesis!)

They say that Nibiru is a planet around the Dark star in the system next to ours and that it's orbit is about 100au from there sun.(Damn Cold) They say the Orbit of that planet slices threw our system every 3600yrs. and that on the next pass threw it will fly around the back of the sun and slingshot between mercury and venus. All the while causing the Solar Tides in our System to ripple and mess with all the planets as it goes threw. this is just this guys SaySo...(Youtube: "2012: Are you ready?3")
Some also say the Earth and every planet in our system on the date predicted by the Aztec calendar will line up in one straight line from the sun out to pluto, (An event they say happens every 10+ thousand years or so... and that All our planets will be aligned with the Black Hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy... Again I have no proof just say so..
Then the Other thing floating around is the Global Shifting.. they say is supposed to happen in 2012.. And that it will rip the planet arart like Pangea and form new contanents and kill 2/3 the population and another 2/3 due to starvation within 6 months after that...
So with all these Human End thread flying around you see what people are trying to figure out...
Even if it all came true the Earth would still be here so it's not the End End.. LOL
