An ion is electrically charged.

A physicist will tell you an ion is a charged atom.

A chemist will tell you an ion is a charged molecule.

Both are correct.

Why would a chemist prefer 'charged molecule' over 'charged atom'? In my mind they seem equally prevalent... And also, I don't think 'charged atom' is a good way to put it. Kind of a contradiction, considering atoms don't have charge...

Atoms can be neutral or charged. The charged ones are called ions.

Atoms can be neutral or charged. The charged ones are called ions. Thus all ions are atoms (though they’re almost always called ions rather than atoms when charged).

Hey guys why can't an atom be called an ion.

If an atom loses an electons or gains one it becomes an ion, an electrically charged particle.

because not all atoms are ions.

yes when an atom loses or gains an electron it becomes an ion, but until that happens it is not an ion

if you had a red object. it would be incorrect to call it purple because when you add blue to it it becomes purple.

Hey r u missing something

A proton can be an ion H+ ion
although this is too an atom but it can be said.

True, I spose it depends on the context to whether a proton is condisdered a proton, or a hydrogen ion...though really the two are equivalent. Like when talking about acids you generally talk about H+ ions.
