I have been trying to come up with a list of reasons why an alien race would approach us. Please feel free to add and comment.
Likely Reasons
-for acquisition of a resource on Earth
-to study Earth
-to request us to join a larger Galacitic union/federation/group and strengthen it
-because it needs a place of refuge after escaping from near extinction
-desire to trade with us
-to request our help of some sort - most likely not technological if they come to us... ; P
-for vacation
Quite unlikely reasons
-coming to Earth for the sole purpose of destroying our structures and killing us - I believe it is unlikely because:
-waste of resources, time, and energy
-destroying things that could be potentially useful for them
-making us as slaves
-maybe for entertainment, but most likely not for work because they would probably have better technology than making our lazy asses clean after them..
-a lone bored, sadistic alien with a fancy spaceship has nothing to do, decides to come to Earth and destroy our buildings for fun |

yes, why would they????
After travelling 10 million light years they have nothing better to do than sticking probes up our butts?? Yeah, right!
Othe than that:
-for acquisition of a resource on Earth - do the words "peak oil" or limited resources strike a chord with you??
-to study Earth - yup, agreed
-to request us to join a larger Galacitic union/federation/group and strengthen it - how would a tribe of primates unable to agree about one single topic for the last 60 years or so strengthen a intergalactic UNO??
-because it needs a place of refuge after escaping from near extinction
-desire to trade with us - WHAT??
-to request our help of some sort - most likely not technological if they come to us... ; P and what help wouldthat be??
-for vacation - Mhmmmmmm you assume that the comcept of "vacation" is known to the aliens...... _________________ I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by |

I suggest that the reason(s) aliens would visit us would be .......... alien. _________________ The Universe is not only weirder than we imagine it is weirder than we can imagine. J.B.S.Haldane. |

Well if they're alive as in "life" then I guess they'd come for the usual reasons: to eat, excrete, reproduce.
I think it likely those "approaching" us would operate in a frame assymetrical to the human individual, so no green guys in spaceships but something more like viral knowledge evolving through interstellar radio transmissions for example. And at some extreme, alien doesn't seem alien. |

I only could think of technical problems with their ship or shuttle. Why should they want to
have contact otherwise?
There were lots of ohhhs and ahhs then and so on, which will be very stressful for them too. |

I think that they wouldn't deal with us because we are being put under the microscope and would be a link to their past. They would be able to understand their pasy with observations through us. _________________ "The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt" - Bertrand Russell |

Funny you said this; I once read a short story where we humans gave up a rewarding relationship with an alien race, because they tasted good when cooked.
I think they would approach us to learn of their own past (as someone suggested) and maybe even to guide us to our next level of civilization in order to help us avoid the whole "destroying ourselves" bit. _________________ "Gullibility kills" - Carl Sagan

Aliens I don't think for a long time will approach us, even if they have FTL travel, time in space is so far changeable its almost hard to think on the level of extraterrestrials visiting us in the 'time' we see. _________________ "Victory is in trying. Defeat is in not". - SVRDW. |

To 'herd' us
we herd inferior species, so a superior species to us would be unlikely to want to 'know us' anymore than we want to know a cow.
They would herd us, farm us, eat us. _________________ 'Time is the space between birth and death' by me. |

On the topic of Ronald McDonald I finally have an excuse to share this video:
