A wonderful question to which I wonder what most of your answers are. To get this thread going I'll add why I think it did and what some famous people thought.
Plato: For the greater good.
Hippocrates: Because of an excess of light pink gooey stuff in its pancreas.
Nietzsche: Because if you gaze too long across the Road, the Road gazes also across you.
Albert Einstein: Whether the chicken crossed the road or the road crossed the chicken depends upon your frame of reference.
Oh what they heck, heres the website I'm getting these from:

Here's my answer circum 2008 (citation needed):

| The answer will not be known until we know what it does on the other side as opposed to what it was doing on the side it was originally on. |

Obviously the chicken crossed the road to get to the other side! Why else would it cross the road ? _________________ "If Earth is heaven and this is the only place we are meant to live, why did God create the rest of the Universe and give us the means of reaching it? "

hello everyone,
Well, I say it is all about the chicken wanted to go see the rooster----on the other side of the road! Where did you find all that philosophy about such an inane topic? Very interesting and I will check out that site.

The question really begs the question of whether the chicken is capable of "want" at all. I, for one, do not think that the chicken is capable of "wanting" to, but merely did so because of a complex interaction of chemicals and structures, encompassing both the chicken's body, the environment which the chicken was in, and, quite possibly, cosmic rays that happened to have passed through and altered the ensuing interaction of the chicken with the environment. (If, the chicken can in fact be called a chicken at all.)

The question also begs the question of whether or not the chicken and the road are separate entities, or simply, both part of a single all-encompassing entity that I will simply call the universe. It is conceivable that the chicken is incapable of crossing the road at all, because the chicken doesn't exist without the road, and the road doesn't exist without the chicken, and neither do you, and neither do I.

you're all mistaken if you assume that the question "why did the chicken cross the road" is in any way related to philosophy - more likely it's a stand-up comedy line _________________ if you find this place too crowded or too confrontational, how about trying Philosophorum,

Alternatively, why did the chicken stop in the middle of the road? It was a Rhode Island Red. _________________ The Universe is not only weirder than we imagine it is weirder than we can imagine. J.B.S.Haldane. |

This is NOT a good question, given that at no point in time has a chicken ever attempted to cross a road, thus the question should be
'Why did a chicken NEVER cross the road?'
The reason being of course is that in modern society chickens are kept in coups and do not roam wild and chickens that do roam wild do so in areas where there are no roads. _________________ 'Time is the space between birth and death' by me. |
