Does anyone know where the story of the werewolf originated? I've heard that it comes from Greek legends. Does it go back any farther than ancient Greece? _________________ JA Cambece

In terms of the Greeks, Zeus (the god) was angered when served human flesh disguised in a meal. He turned the guy into a 'wolf-man'. - not for a few days a month, but permanently. I don't think it is anything to do with the modern 'werewolf', other than it may have been the inspiration for it.
I have heard on another occasion that it was thought in ancient Arabia women were affected by the phases of the moon - and became wolves - in packs. I have not found any evidence to support this though in a backward society it may seem plausible.
Either way don't lose any sleep, they are a fiction (they are aren't they?) |

Don't worry I won't loose any sleep on it.... I've had the barbed wire around my house coated with silver, so I feel safe. _________________ JA Cambece

I understand where the ancient Arabs were coming from. My girlfriend sometimes acts like a pack of wolves and this phenomenon seems to be in tune with the phase of the moon. Not sure if this is where the legend started though.

There are were-legends that exist around the world. Were-jaguars from South America and were-hyenas from Africa are just a couple. The werewolf does seem to come from the legend of Lycaon, however.
On a side note, the Cherokee (a people whose history and legends can be traced back 10,000 years....a wee bit earlier than the Lycaon story) have a legend about a "talking dog" that warned mankind of a great flood.
Not exactly a werewolf but interesting, I thought.
Oh and sorry about bumping such an old post. Werwolves just so happen to be a subject near and dear to my heart. _________________ "All the better to eat you with, my dear..." |
