Hey, what are "Wave Functions"?

I read these sentences: "Each electron can be described by its wave function" and "Combining or mixing the wave functions for the atomic orbitals in this way is called hybridization".

I understand "hybridization" in terms of excitation of electrons from ground state to increase the number of bonds and also stability, but I don't get what this "wave function" is.

Can anyone help me?
