What is the difference between different versions of Vista - Ultimate, Home Basic etc.. is there anything significant or is it mostly just for show ?

Home Basic is supposed to work on more computers since it doesn't have all of the aero effects, you can find the differences list on Microsoft's website. Not too much different, just a marketing thing mostly.

Don't get vista, wait until windows 7 comes out in 2009 if you MUST use a Microsoft OS. You can still find XP machines, new ones, for sale, but you have to go online. PCMall has some XP machines that are pretty good actually.
