Vector calculus is just an extension of normal calculus into functions of more than one variable. For example in normal calculus, you work with single variable functions of the form y=f(x), whereas vector calculus allows you to examine rates of change and integrals of functions of more than one variable, f(x1, x2,...,xn), which has alot of applications since many physical systems have more than one variable.

vectors are just the best way to keep track of/denote the rates of changes with respect to different variables, and they also have some geometric meanings too, as well as useful operations.
