Is there a siginificant difference between sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup and sugar naturally found in fruit? I'm curious, because one would generally believe a glass of fruit juice to be healthier than a glass of soda, but they can actually have the same amount of sugar per serving. If there is a significant difference, what is it? I'm guessing perhaps what the body has to go through to process it...maybe more work has to be done to convert fructose to glucose pre-glycolysis, whereas with natural sugars, there's more glucose or sucrose, and thus less work to be done before glycolysis can occur?

Fructose is an important sugar you're body needs. Its found in lots of fruit and veg, as well as honey.
Usually combined with sucrose and glucose.

Its neccessary for the blood and other functions as well as obviously giving you energy.

But like anything, too much can often be bad for you.

The advantage with fructose is it's the most sweetest of the sugars so you don't need alot to taste as well as it being slowly released in the body.

Whereas other forms of sugar such as cane is quickly absorbed giving you that sugar rush, but leaving you feeling drained in a relatively short space of time.

I buy bags of fructose from my supermarket instead of ordinary sugar. Its a little bit more expensive but you don't use so much.

I started to buy it when my son was small and prone to hyper and as well as banning coke and high sugar drinks, i most definitely noticed a big difference in his behaviour.

More answers are most welcome, if they're out there. Smile

I think glucose can be bound in the blood and tissues by the presence of insulin from the pancreas, while fructose cannot. So I think you use the fructose until it is all gone, although it gets metabolised much slower than glucose. That is why long distance runners often snack on bananas along the way as, apart from the electrolytes, it is high in fructose. I am sure that you get much more sucrose (consisting of glucose and fructose) from soft drinks than from fruit. A search on wiki revealed that regular high consumption of fructose can cause obesity! Kalster - I think you'll find that high regular consumption of any form of sugar can cause obesity!

That's right instead of having a little sprinkle on my cornflakes in the morning, i shovel it down my gullet in bucketfuls and i'm rolling about right now like a big fat sticky gobstopper!

So try contributing something we don't know already!

Fructose is a better form of sugar because it's released more slowly in the body and therefore you don't get the adverse swinging effects on your energy and moods and your body has more of a chance to utilize it where needed.

Agreed! I got the impression from the article that it might be doing so to a higher degree than the same volume of glucose or sucrose. Cut a guy some slack! Geeze....I like firebreathing women

I just learned today that apparently high fructose corn syrup is banned in Europe. And there aren't as many (maybe I could say not nearly as many) obese people over there. So apparently, there's a big difference between high fructose corn syrup and other forms of sugar used in foods...

Mix (in a bowl) 10 tablespoons of sugar and mix with oil (olive oil or preferably almond) enough to form a gloopy paste

Give it a good stir.

Then rub it in all over your body....scrub, scrub, scrub (especially on those dry hard skin bits cellulite wobbly buts and extra on your bum cheeks)

Now get in said hot bath

Aaaahhhh.................tingle tingle and soft as a babys armpit Very Happy

I have revealed new kinds of sugars which are present at foodstuff and which are vital for organism of the person. I have named them vitaminoid sugars: mannose, fucose, ribose, arabinose and some other minor sugar. Look on my sites in more detail http://cholesterol2006.narod.ru/Nobel2008.html, http://ipchepurnoy.narod.ru/Vitaminoid.html
I shall be very glad to benevolent discussion of this problem.

Do you have a chemical formula for any of them?

Chemical formulas of each sugar is available in any textbook in organic chemistry.
Mannose is isomer of glucose and fructoses. www.jbc.org/cgi/reprint/152/1/135.pdf

Arabinose and ribose are pentoses. http://www.answers.com/topic/arabinose?cat=technology http://www.answers.com/ribose?cat=technology

Fucose is a hexose deoxy sugar http://www.answers.com/fucose?cat=technology

Except for the glucose, blood of the healthy person contains also others monosugars - mannose, fucose, ribose, arabinose, xylose and others. These monosugars are present at human blood in quantity 10 - 15 mg%.
