Seems like an interesting project and we might learn more about the earth by digging down deeper. Anyone else in favor of it? Anyone else against it?

Wow that seems fascinating indeed! Do you know what they're expecting to find out with this project?
Perhaps it's no coincidence that with the high oil prices deep, difficult to exploit oil sources are getting more and more attention. So this may also serve to improve our technology for deep sea oil drilling. |

Well, a friend on the project told me that they are doing this for science (and I want them to prove the flat-earth society wrong  ). I hope they find out more about S waves/earthquakes so we can, one day, give warnings about it. Oil couldn't hurt either. New methods and technologies are good. The Moho project was never finished due to funding, but I think that they can do it this time around.

Think earth quakes are more to do about Plate Tectonics, than what the core influence could be...
The Russian 'Kola Bore Hole' (think 1960's) did bore about 8 miles deep, the current deepest man made. They found water and water effects on rock several miles below where expected, the thought then water formed from deep crust minerals (unexpected) and concentrated 'hydrogen' bubbling up in the hot mud from near that 8 mile limit (unexpected). Many Scientist in Russia today are convinced oil itself forms from some action of the core and not from organic matter (fossil). Legends were born from this drilling 'Hole to Hell', which stemmed from the Kola Hole, thinking they quit when hitting open space (air hole). Actually they quit because the drill bit would not work, when temperatures reached what was estimated at 570 F. Even with new metal alloys and methods, think the Japanese project will meet the same fate.
Mohole, the US 1957 project off the US/Mexico Pacific Coast, did end for lack of funding, but inspired several oil drilling projects in water and later deep waters. The Jack 2, Chevron project the current record holder for oil depths (several others close), about 200 miles south of New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico is from 7k foot water depth and 20k foot (near 4 miles into the crust) under the ocean floor.
If interested in deep earth crust projects, geo thermal energy, which comes from heat deep (inserted water for steam) in the crust is an ongoing project. Its been around in the US for some time, with large projects around California and one I visited in the 80's, just off I-15, near Las Vegas... |
