On another thread Biohazard said that there are no significant differences between Sunni and Shiite versions of Islam. But, would somebody destroy a holy place of their own religion? What's going on over there? |

That's absolute nonsense, obviously. If anyone really said that I can only presume he is neither Sunni nor Shiite, and just wanted to display his ignorance on the subject.
Irish catholics and protestants have been fighting vigorously for many decades, with anger fueled by a violent history that goes back several centuries. The fact that they are fractions of the same (Christian) belief doesn't mean there are no significant differences. The violence between Shiites and Sunnis unfortunately goes back to almost a millennium (about 850 years) before Martin Luther's theses!
Furthermore, just as with the Irish, religious animosity is often combined with political (and in some cases tribal and racial) friction. In the case of Iraq, the Shiite majority (along with the Kurds) has been dominated and oppressed by a politically powerful Sunni minority for a long time.
Yeah, it's sad that ancient monuments are among the casualties of this war, but what is the value of this mosque compared to that of a child?
Now, you talk of escalation?? |

That's just a damn shame. Even if you have no religious feelings toward the building....It still was a beautiful, historic structure. _________________ -Mac
