A swarm of robotic insects is being developed for the military to hunt down enemy fighters in buildings and caves, carry mini bombs and identify chemical, nuclear or biological weapons.

Cool. They can offhandedly perform brutal deeds we lack the courage to do ourselves in person. Cool

Wars are becoming like simulated computer games!

Now all they seem to have to do is look at a screen and press a button!

I don't think it's right, it makes the enemy more faceless and detached from the reality of actually killing a real person.

There will be no conscience left at all at this rate!

At this rate there will also be no soldiers, only robots fighting robots... hmmm I guess that's a good thing isn't it?

It's a serious problem, reconciling our traditional notion of a "combatant". Because while all "combatants" are fair game, in war, many of today's modern combatants commute to work and sit at desks. In other words, they "hide" amongst civilians. How to fight those building, maintaining, and otherwise operating "autonomous weaponry" and the echelons of computerized "defense systems", without causing collateral damage, e.g. "terrorism"?

I think a nation that so thoroughly blurs private industry and civilian life with defense is really daring for a low hit. Sad

No

Any form of war is not a good thing

We should be growing out of that idea by now!

Money would be better spent and technology better used in creating peace and solutions to real human problems rather than creating more.

I couldn't agree more. But a post ago you were saying that faceless fighting is wrong. Suggesting you prefer soldiers to see the whites of the eyes of the people they kill. A strange contrary.

I was just saying that, in this context, I'd rather robots detroy robots than people destroy people.

But on fundamental pacifism, I think we agree.

Yes faceless fighting IS wrong. I think any form of fighting is wrong.

But what i or other pacifists think isn't going to make them lay down their arms and stop fighting.

So IF there is going to be fighting then it is more preferable that they do it on a human level face to face, to at least be able to experience the full consequences of their actions and hopefully conscience might come into play.

This faceless fighting like simulated war games frightens me, because we've got heaps of kids playing these games for fun and amusement.

It's only a small step away for these kids to join an army and play these same games for real. The worrying thing is here is that they have been previously brainwashed in seeing it all as a bit of harmless fun.

Therefore i don't think they're brains will connect and fully realise that they are actually killing people.

Makes you wonder about the popularity of these simulated war-games. Is it subliminal training for our future armies??

you make some fair points, although I think we are drifting into quite a different debate now. I understand your fear of facelss fighting against people, but surely faceless fighting against other facelss machines is better than bloodshed.

But to address your new line of thought breifly: games > real life.
It is a worry yes, I have to agree. Especially with such games as America's Army and such, that really brings some real life soldiery to the fore. However, I have also seen evidence to suggest that gamers do not inherently make good soldiers because the skills are quite dramatically different when applied to a real world context. Not to mention that 99% of soldiering is actually marching, sitting in holes, watching nothing, filling in a whole, march, dig a new hole etc etc. So, maybe you can aim a weapon and kill a man, but doesn't mean you will have the mindset to actually be a soldier or fight.

No, it's explicit. America's Army is "a tactical multiplayer first-person shooter owned by the United States Government and released as a global public relations initiative to help with U.S. Army recruitment. The game is financed by the U.S. Government and distributed for free."

The image of a grubby soldier "filling in a whole, march, dig a new hole etc etc" is scenic, but the modern soldier is just as likely to be hovering over a screen "pixel hunting". These are very much cogs in a larger war machine "system", quite detached from "the whites of their eyes".

Trying to put me out of a job?! Shocked Very Happy Very Happy Laughing

I understand though, the world would be better without war, but in all honesty I don't think that will ever happen there will always be someone who wants to gain or destroy something else someone else has. And personnally I hate the idea of robots fighting the battles for me. As Selene said it should never be so easy to kill a person that you simply have to push a button. That is sort of one of the reasons I chose the unit I am trying to become a member of, the US Navy SEALs are a DA (Direct Action) Force we often engage and kill our targets from mere feet away or closer, usually never futher than 150 to 200 yards, about the avarage kill distance in Iraq. And between 200 to 300 yards in Afganistan. I belive that taking human life should never come easy, but in the US Navy SEALs it is a pretty common occurance for the men to become accostamed to killing due to the nature of the job and the copious number slain at thier hands, it can sometimes and often does make men colder, and can give them meaner outlook at life, sometimes making it harder to conform to civilian life in extreme cases. Thats usually why SOF units tend to get out and go for dangerous jobs to fill the void of what war left behide often they become PMC's (Privite Military Contractors). So I personally belive that killing still should be face to face human to human, because if we use robots, the idea and events in war will no longer effect us like they did. Look at it like this you care when one of your soldiers die, but would you care if a robot died, when a soldier dies you think of how horrabile war is and how you wish it to end but if a robot is the only one loseing it's life (or function) would you care a war is going on, no one is dieing so why should you care when you see that KIA report it will merely be a number with no face and so war will start to appear as if it is common place right along with video games and movies, simply blending in with socity as an event sort of like a professional competion bulit around two conflicting nations with no repercusions but the mere loss of a few billion in machinery.

Thanks,

Demon Twisted Evil

Honestly I have come to the conclusion that war will always be present in existence due to inequality.... nothing will ever equate. Inequality causes motion etc.

Anyways...

I feel the future of warfare is what I will call "peaceful war" where the military fighting will be outfitted with the ability to, in essence, null pain within an immediate time frame upon impact of any object...

Of course it may be a little way off considering that it would require a semi-complex system that allowed for interaction between a neural chip and various nano devices placed within the body that would take away pain.

But in theory you could make a warrior numb to pain immediately upon cause.

Hey I am no soldier but I know pain sucks...
