I think that only violent criminals should be incarcerated and paedophiles/rapists etc.
Thieves etc should be rehabilitated, receive a substantial amount of community service, but otherwise be free within a set boundary and curfew.
I don't think there is anything to be gained by imprisoning lesser offenders, it costs us a lot to keep them indoors, they fulfill no useful function and there is no evidence that prison is a deterrent against a first offence or reoffending. _________________ 'Time is the space between birth and death' by me. |

As I am forced to say so many times; In the US you have 50 sets of laws and a Federal law system, which requires broken laws by the same person in two or more states (crossing state lines). In many of the States, first time offender are not sent to jail and others classify different crimes as felonies. Narcotic law, domestic law and lately child support most often mentioned. The problem is the Supreme Court has ruled these are the States right, as well as punishment. In California if you manage to get caught in the least of felonies three times, the third sentence if life. Until the relaxing of 'pot' laws some reasonably innocent people were victims.
Funny thing though I agree in principle. Sending young or first time offenders off to learn how to become big time villains or practice some perverted sex, seems a little counter productive, to rehabilitation or the deterrent philosophies. It would seem to me, some less expensive educational program, with a job at the end of the program, financed by the State or county, would be a simple answer. |

They are sent out to dig fjords. You didn't think those were natural did you?
So ToR, you would not send to jail the corrupt businessman whose machinations deprive hundreds of old people of their retirement nest-eggs, leading to their early deaths, or prolonged misery? Methinks you have not thought this through. _________________ The Universe is not only weirder than we imagine it is weirder than we can imagine. J.B.S.Haldane. |

I agree, I live by the notion 'A leapoard never changes its spots'. By that I mean very clever businessmen, conmen, can fake rehabilitation, leave prison and then harm people financially all over again once they are out if they do your system ToR. No offense intended because it does sound for the benefit of the good people out there in prison, who perhaps actually have learned their lesson. But I'm afraid there are more bad than the good, and perhaps the ugly are in there somewhere too, along with Clint Eastwood... _________________ An apple a day... Oh never mind. |

In prison, you have your meals in the canteen, there is a library, a gym, a pool table and exercise yard and you can get drugs far more easily than you can outside of prison. What I would propose is this....Instead of a 6 month prison sentence for say assault, you get a 1 or 2 week sentence; but instead you are locked away in a padded cell, (with ventillation) but no natural light. lights stay on for 12 hours and go off for 12 hours. you are not allowed out of your private cell to talk to ANYONE. your meals are shoved under the door, as are your change of clean clothes and towel/toilet paper. there is a bed of sorts, a blanket, a sink and a toilet inside the cell; nor are you allowed to make any phone calls; nor will you know what the time is; depending on the crime you could be in there for anything upto 4-5 months, and you have to spend the time alone, in sheer boredom.
As for murderers who will definately be going in for life, then you'd stick them in a prison where there human rights are less affected. As for child sex murderers, bring back capital punishment - they will never be allowed out so why are we keeping them alive ?
Now, on to cannabis laws and their evident link to knife crime. The high levels of THC found in todays skunk cannabis are enough to bring on psychosis. - fact. There is little point in upgrading cannabis from a grade C to a grade B drug because those who take drugs do it because they want to, they dont care about which "class" its in. This is how i propose we tackle the problem......
Legalise it! - WHAT!?!?! you might say. Okay...If the government were to legalise cannabis it could bring in legislation that controls the amount of THC that manufacturers may put in each cannabis cigarette/joint. Further to this, the government could slap a tax on it and make a bit of money from purchases. This would also free up precious police time and resources. _________________ The hand of time rested on the half-hour mark, and all along that old front line of the English there came a whistling and a crying. Thats not fair now is it? They are weak and need help. You wouldn't shoot somebody because they can't do their homework would you? Or turn up late? Life has its own subtle 'punishments' to help people learn. They don't need shooting Absum. If I lived by that rule, you stepped out of line there saying that. Now you wouldn't like to be shot for saying that even if you were unaware you stepped out of line now would you? _________________ An apple a day... Oh never mind. |

Yes i would want you to shoot me
What's the point of being a part of the human race if you don't stand in line? |

Well do unto others as thou would have done unto thyself you're at least living by. Well, if you're not in line then.. Well I'm not actually sure what you mean. What is the point of being human race if you do or do not stand in line? What line anyway? To who's standards is this line made? Who has the right to set up this line everyone must adhere to? _________________ An apple a day... Oh never mind. |
