Im trying to make a portable EMP for a science project for a class I have. I need to be able to transport it easliy in a car and use it while driving and being able to use it with out it blowing out the electronnics in my car. If you have any advice please tell me. It also needs to be powerful enough to knock out another car.

If its powerful enough to knock out another car then your car will be disabled also.

Not really because all the wiring would be exposed to the EMP so that you'd have to go in and change all the wires in your car and beef up the electrical system to prevent it from being affected. come to think about it, it could be done but the cost would be rather high. Why are you thinking about this? The people at MIT have already tried it out.

My science proffessor gave us an assignment at which we are told to pick a movie where science is being used in a wierd way and then we try to replicate the device and try to get it to work. I chose the movie James Bond where i think it was the Aston Martin threw out a EMP out of its rear fender. If we can not replicate the item then we just try our best to make it some what of the device. So if there is a way and i believe there is some way to shield the whole back end of the car with a lead shield maybe but I'm having a hard time trying to power it.

I'm not sure how a lead shield would help, since (to the best of my knowledge) a EMP works by creating a huge magnetic field, that induces a really strong current in the wires- enough to burn out the wires and parts.
Lead would only protect you from radiation.

What if you built a magnetic casing onto the EMP "bomb", so that it would stick to the hood of the car, and then engineered it so that it would have a short-range effect. That way your car would (hopefully) be out of the blast.
Of course, this would make it a one-shot grenade, not a EMP gun. On the plus side, it only needs to reach for 1-1.5 meters, since the batteries, and circutry in modern cars, is all just under the hood.

Another problem would be making the EMP itself. One idea that really intrests me personally is a mini EMP, one that is handheld. You could hold it next to a computer or a light switch to burn it out. That would need three components, a power source, a capacitor bank to build up the power in, and induction coils to produce the magnetic field. A grenade might work with the same basic parts. The grenade itself would be a cylinder, mostly coils, with about the rear 1/3 of it the capacitor banks. Both the grenade and the firing tube would have conducting strips by the sides, hooked up to a power source. These would be used to charge up the capacitor, and then you would need a bit of circutry to "dump" the capacitors' power into the coils at the right time.

This stuff is all theoretical- it's mostly my own speculation, and there are probably a bunch of problems that will arise if you try to build one(a strong power source and the weight distribution on the grenade come to mind).
Still... I hope it helps.

One more thing- you could also try and make a normal EMP. But that involves thermite explosive, and is for knocking out a facility or a city, not one car. If you have thermite, you might as well just throw THAT at the car and blow it up without bothering with EMPs.

Anyhow, I hope your project goes well.

P.S. You would need special capacitors, as well. Otherwise you won't be able to store enough power to burn OTHER capacitors out without frying your own.

It's easily scalable. Capacitors can be tiny. But then your EMP might just bridge a little gap inside a microchip. Cost and effectiveness are directly proportional to capacitor bulk. Coils are relatively cheap & easy.

Where do you start with a guy like this?

would it be to tell him that a small nuclear device is usually triggers an EMP device?

OK so the easy way is to make a movie, everything is possible in a movie.

so if I wanted to make a portable EMP, how far would it reach?

IT would not knock out a car, there is too much metal around the electronics and it would behave like a faraday cage.

Small EMP laboratory systems running at about 20KW PEP (Peak Envelope Power) can wreck a PC motherboard at a range of about 3 metres. but this is under lab conditions.

For a 6 metre gap you would therefore need around 80KW of power.

I have heard it said there is enough power in a lightning strike to power a medium sized town for about 7 minutes, yet we do not hear of such strikes causing any damage to electronics nearby.

Lighting produces EMP pulses that can be detected thousands of miles away.

Sorry to be a dampener but if such things were possible the Police/FBI etc would use them to disable fleeing suspects, think about it.

We used to blank cassette tapes - re-recording quality was cleaner that way. A lot of audiophiles built their own devices. My father made one with insulated case, 120 volt plug-in... but it never garbled tapes at any range to speak of.
