Reference? A proper reference, not the Fortean Times, or a third rate TV program.
Think about the characteristics of chalk, a carbonate rock: soluble. Lots of cavities. Cavities things can fall into. Cavities that can get filled up by more carbonate at a later date. Think stalactite/stalagmite.

Well, maybe one lone family of smiths figured out how to make proper steel. A technology like that could have been invented and lost 100 times over before it ever came into the mainstream.
The smith who discovered it would keep it very secret, so only he, and maybe his apprentices would be able to do it, and kings would have to pay him big bucks to get what he had. Add to that the incredible likelihood of being illiterate, so nothing gets written down. The whole formula is in his head, probably consisting in anecdotal measurements like using the span of his own hand, or a "pinch" of one material and a "dash" of another. No formal units.
I heard they found a copper chizel down in South America that was harder than forged steel. I don't doubt it. It's obvious, however, that there weren't a whole lot of them made. |
