I read this book once where a guy describes the grooved-ware people of the british isles that existed in pre-history. Has any of you heard of them? He goes on to make wild claims involving freemasons and knights templar etc. These people aparently had advanced astronomy, being able to predict venus's solar eclipse. _________________ "Gullibility kills" - Carl Sagan

As far as I know this whole "groove-ware" bit surrounds some artifacts found in northern England that had characteristic grooved lines on top. The markings appear to be similar in origin so some think that there was a group of people whose artwork had that trait, distinguishing them from other groups. That's about it.
You can see some of the stuff if you travel to Wiltshire.
I haven't thought much about it, but I suppose it's probably just a different pattern that was probably both easy to make, and appealing at the time. Anything beyond that is probably both conjecture and fiction. There's not really enough to go on. _________________ Wolf

Who knows. There's craploads of mounds in northern England. There's more mounds per county than zits on a teenager's face. _________________ Wolf

The Grooved ware people, as you call them, are better known as the Beaker Folk. They were found in western europe and Britain (for the most part) and lived roughly 4000 years ago. It is believed they are responsible for Phase II of Stonehenge.
By the way, they are called 'Beaker' folk due to a common grave-good find: groove-patterned pottery.
Apparently, I had it wrong Groovedware predates the Beaker folk by several centuries. This type of pottery shows up just after phase I of Stonehenge, that is, roughly 2900BC, in many henge monuments, yet it is not associated with a particular type of monument e.g. barrow, henge, enclosures, etc. Groovedware was a reflection of a new cult, perhaps started in the Boyne valley in Ireland. Pieces are found in the Orkneys that pre-date those found on Salisbury plain by over 600 years! We know very little of this culture, only that it was likely accepted by the local people, and is not the product of 'invading hordes'. |
