First, you start with a graduate degree in chemical engineering...

Unless you're in law-enforcement or the military, what would you need a flashbang for?

Well that's not your problem. If he wants to assault a bank with it, that's his problem. Laughing

Flashbang grenades are made from combustables that produce a great amount of light and pressure very rapidly. Probably a 'fast' gunpowder (like blank powder) and an additive to make the 'flash'; something similar to the old fashion photographer's illumination powder.

The tricky part is the fuse. After positive activation, the fuse must delay long enough to allow the grenade to be 'delivered'. Possibly a short length of cannon fuse ignited by a large rifle primer?

I used to know three guys who made their own flashbang grenades. I can't remember their real names, but we called them "Gimp", "Three Finger", and "Stubby".

Must be awesome to be able to make such things (no not for robbing a bank, just for fun Razz ). Maybe Magnesium is used as additive for the flash? I think I remember this from a chemistry test long ago, but maybe this is the same as the photographer powder that's allready mentioned.

Don't forget to put it in a wrapper that splits but does not fragment.

Plastic does the trick, the grenade itself also has holes in the sides to allow for the blast to push out but with no fragmentation. I will not get into discussing how to build one however the chemicals used are magnesium and ammonium perchlorate.

I disagree. Unless your talking HDPE, the use of plastics in pyrotechnics is generally avoided. They have a habit of splitting into fragments which can cause some nasty injuries.

PE in a grenade ?? With a burn rate of around 900m/s dont think thats gonna give me much time to throw it !! Laughing

Nope, Im talking about a plastic bag style wrapping keeping the chemical components locked tightly together encased in a strong metal with large holes around the outside. Unless of course you have injured yourself once with a plastic bag?

I dont think fragmentation will be a problem Smile

or put a huge dustbin big around your head and body after you have eaten vindaloo mixed with with baked beans and THEN hyperventilate. Laughing

I like flashbangs.
I used them once at air cadets.
And smoke grenades.
They are fun.
