| I have a 500GB external hard drive which i partitioned into three when i bought it: one 360GB formatted with Mac OS X's Ext2 Journaled or whatever they use, one 40GB FAT32 and one 100GB FAT32. I recently tried to install windows on the 100GB partition, and when I ran the windows installer, it refused to install on that partition, so I tried deleting the partition (it was blank), and creating a new one. This did not work either, so I gave up on the idea. I have now got hold of a PC anyway, and so I would like to use the partition for storing files from my mac. However, the partition will not mount and Disk Utility will not recognise it. DiskWarrior says it is an fDisk partition, which I believe is an MS-DOS filesystem. However, it will not even show up on Windows and will not mount on my mac. I do not have enough space on my internal hard drive to be able to copy the contents across and format the whole thing, so my question is: Apart from copying all contents to another drive, how can I access the partition and maybe reformat just it to FAT32 or some usable filesystem? |

Download a copy of PartedMagic or GPARTED from http://www.distrowatch.com Burn the iso and boot from the disk. These two Linux distros are specialized for disk formatting and partitioning and should work great. They can see hfs, ntfs, ext2, ext3, FAT, FAT32, XFS, and many more.

I believe you will need an intel x86 chip or similar to boot from your mac, if your mac is powerpc youll need to download specialized versions. _________________ “It’s no wonder that truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense.” - Mark Twain |

| It worked a treat! GParted was able to reformat the partition to FAT32, and it's working fine now. Thanks. |
