Hi guys,
I'd like to know how easy/difficult it was for a german jew to emigrate to either the US or Australia or Canada just after Hitler was elected.
Could people easily afford the cost of travel?
Were immigration laws of the cited countries more/less rigid than now?
Were they allowed to leave Germany?

Immediately after the election it was still not that difficult to leave if you had the foresight to recognize what was going to happen. It really wasn't untill after the reichstag (spelling?) fire that things started to get hairy. As for cost I'm not sure how affordable it was for people but I would imagine it was probably easier to move internationally than it is now. I can't say anything about the US or Austrailia because I don't know but Canadian immigration laws didn't really start to get strict untill the late 60's to mid 70's.

Do you mean that there wasn't an anti-jew propaganda already running during/before his election? Or, he hadn't exposed his views toward jews yet? |

The views had been well aired, but it was very easy to take it to be political rhetoric.
I believe - but will have to check - that the UK did not make it especially easy for German jews to emigrate there. The nazis may have been the ones who tried their 'Final Solution', but jew hating had been a popular pastime throughout all Europe for several centuries.

Note that I never mentioned the UK, but were especially interested in knowing the facts about the US, Australia and Canada.
How could I find out about their immigration rules/restrictions during that time?
How about the cost of travel for the middle-class??
If the jews were considered so wealthy by germans, why couldn't they simply leave the country an head to a better place with less discrimination?
I don't get it.
I mean, there must have been something preventing them from doing so. |

| How easy do you think it is to just leave your home, job and family and go somewhere with no idea what you are going to do? There was really nowhere to go, since the immigrations quotas were exceeded. Also, I don't think anybody really knew Hitler was going to implement the Final Solution. |

I wish to emphasise the points made by Harold. The jews were, until Hitler commenced his actions, first and foremost Germans. Why should a German leave Germany? Why should you turn your back on the language, the culture, the climate, that has been all you have known and all that your forefathers have known for many generations?
You would need an immensely compelling reason to do so. You would also need some evidence that you were not going to encounter the same, or worse hostility in the country to which you were moving. I suggest that there was little or no reason to expect that before it was too late.

I thought "liberals" were going to share a similar fate in the USA for a while there. Pro-millitary people kept calling everyone a "traitor" if they expressed the smallest disagreements with lil' George.
Anyway, glad that got cleared up, at least for a while. Racism is pretty close to dead, but there will always be something people try and hate about. Illegal Hispanic immigrants might get finally solved, but they can leave very easily, no passport or anything. |
