Hey
Can animals really like music?
Is it possible for (for example) a monkey to have different favourite music bands and styles?
tell me what you think..

I'd say they might. They may be able to detect the frequencies and tone of the music itself. So they may not like it for the reason we do, but they may prefer being around some tracks than others. I'm curious to why some dogs 'sing' to some songs.

Some animals, especially cockatoos and grey parrots seem to be attracted more to some music than others, although I don't think this has to do with the same appeal music has to people, which is much more complex.

I think maybe it's comparable to how dogslike to be scratched in different places. I've had one who liked it on it's head and another who liked it under her belly, etc. Perhaps it's more a psychosomatical process, rather than the emotion that music would bring to humans Smile

It's definitely unlikely that they'd pay attention to lyrics, right? Very Happy

I doubt they "get" music any more than they "get" mathematics. It just doesn't register.

Hunters wear these black & red checkered jackets. Squares are easy for another hunter to spot, but deer's eye - I think - tends to stumble over the pattern.

I seem to recall many experiments done on animals where music had a central role. I think, if I'm not mistaken, that animals generally likes music like Mozart which seem to also improve their intellect somehow (in some cases).

I think there was an experiment done with labrats where they were put them in a labyrint. First I think they played some rock music which seemed to confuse the labrats more than help them. If I recall correctly, the labrats never found the way out of the labyrint with rock music. Afterwards they played Mozart which seemed to help the labrats get out of the labyrint quicker than normal.

The explanation I think was that Mozart seemed to stimulate the brain. Something to do with patterns as well. I can't remember anything specific.

Another experiment was done on TV in Norway Very Happy They wanted to see what effect music might have on cows. First they played heavy-metal which made the cows go running for their lives Laughing Afterwards they played Mozart, which didn't seem to have any effect at all.

I still could be mistaken about Mozart though. Maybe there are some animals who like heavy-metal or something (I kinda doubt it though Rolling Eyes ).

I recall an experiment like this being conducted in an elementary school; while most didn't particularily enjoy the music, some students did get better grades. They also used Mozart Smile

Since humans are animals, I would answer the question in the opening post with yes.

Although I do suspect that people often lie about liking certain music, such as quoting Britney Spears as their favourite artist.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's played GotY.

Maybe the heavy-metal just scared them away? Very Happy
