You're probably thinking of Abraham's sons Isaac and Ishmael. Isaac was the son of Abraham's wife Sarah, Ishmael the son of his concubine Hagar. Isaac was the father of the twins Esau and Jacob, the latter from whom the Jews are supposed to have descended, while the Muslims are supposed to have descended from Ishmael.

Abraham and Isaac have had a profound effect on the course of world history and, hence, on the modern world. Three of the world's major religions are descended from Abraham (including the two biggest religious groups), and Abrahamic religions are followed by more than half of the world's population.

I thought that the three major religions of today (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) all come from Isaac. Or did they all just come from Abraham through different sons?

Could you provide some references on Ishmael, because I was trained as Jehovah's Witness and I never found any reference to Ishmael. From what I know Abraham and Sarah had long wanted a child and they soon gave up on that once they became very old. God gave them a son named Issac and etc. Was Ishmael just omitted from the JW version of the bible or are there still verses about him and his mother.

I would be very surprised if the JWs made a translation that altered the contents by that much. But perhaps you can give me an honest answer to this question: as a JW did you really read straight from the Bible all the time or just read verses that were pointed to by a study guide?

You must have slept through that class, Trix. Very Happy

Here is the story of Ishmael on the official JW web site.

ishmael is not exactly the ancestor of all muslims, he is the traditional ancestor according Muhammed of the Arabs, the first "ethnic" group that converted to islam

Honestly I would like to say I read directly but in reality nope I read what was pointed out, but whenever we had discussions of Abraham, we always ended up going to Issac and such and we never mentioned Ishmael being a brother.

/facepalm for being dim, didn't check the internet
